Posada Massó in Villanueva de la Jara

One of the most emblematic buildings in the local architecture is the Posada Massó in Villanueva de la Jara, whose architect, Juan Naranjo, built it with the purpose of being a shelter for muleteers and using the stables.

The Posada Massó is an Asset of Cultural Interest

It is a point of interest for tourists and visitors to La Jara. Although the Posada Massó goes beyond having been an establishment where to stay to sleep in La Jara. This old inn is an icon that invites us to imagine those ancient times when wood and stone were everything.

The Inn at Villanueva de la Jara

It is, from its own aesthetics of brick, lime and adobe, a typical structure of a traditional La Mancha house. Presumably for this reason, the Posada Massó was a meeting, rest and refreshment point when passing through Villanueva de la Jara.

Where is the Posada Massó

The building has its central door in the Plaza Mayor and its rear façade on Nueva Street. Its interior street connects both points, making it an obligatory stop to contemplate the restoration work that has been carried out.

La Posada Massó, a Site of Cultural Interest

But the Posada Massó is much more than a tourist attraction.

In 1992 the Posada Massó was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest. This means the application of protection by the public administration given the historical and artistic value of the property. It is, therefore, part of the tradition of Villanueva de la Jara and of its own history.

What the Posada Massó is like

As a Renaissance construction from the 16th century, the inn offers a characteristic Arabian look, with its curved roof tiles. Also the reed supported by mud, used as insulation. The wooden beams are scissor-shaped and the walls are grooved.

The living spaces are separated from the stables, which still maintain the mangers, as feeding troughs, next to the rear entrance.

Having described the generalities of the traditional La Mancha house, the specific characteristics of the Posada Massó are: an irregular floor plan construction, with a façade facing three streets, an interior patio (corral) and around it, the other rooms. As a novelty, there is a partially covered street that runs through the interior of the house, communicating Nueva Street with the Plaza.

Aesthetics of the Posada Massó

The lowered arch at the main door, the gate, is perhaps the most characteristic feature of the building. The stone and the columns that support it also draw such aesthetics. Ironwork on the windows and the Castilian baseboards complete the architectural spectacle.

At the same time, the floor of the passageway of the Posada Massó is composed of thousands of small pebbles in the form of mosaics.

Visiting the Posada Massó

A visit to the Posada Massó is commonplace, and passing through it is, we would say, almost obligatory for those who wish to immerse themselves in the culture of Villanueva de la Jara.
